What is DU Meter and why do I need it?

TweakMASTER Knowledge Base article KB0038

DU Meter is part of the TweakMASTER Pro package and is intended to help you monitor your bandwidth and see exactly what your Internet connection is doing. Simply run it and size the little window and place it where ever is convenient on your computer desktop.

Right click on the window or the little icon in the system tray on your taskbar and select "Help". Read the page that opens... then go to the "Contents" button and read the various sections to become better acquainted with how it works.

There are also various options available for DU Meter. To set your options in DU Meter right click on the icon in the tray (or the window itself in the latest version) and choose "options" from the menu.

Here's the way we run DU meter here... your preferences may vary :-)

Under Window Properties we check:

  • Always on Top
  • Start minimized
  • Minimize when idle
  • Kilobits per second
  • Load with windows
  • Display Mode: both graphical and numeric

Under graph scale: Pre-Defined Values and specify your modem size (or use Manual setup and specify the highest value you want your graph to display)

Overall, we think you will find DU Meter quite useful to keep an eye on your modem throughput, and show you graphically how well your connection is functioning. And it can help detect the presence of any worm or virus introduced to your system by monitoring ALL incoming and outgoing data flow from your Internet connection. Therefore if you contact one of these worms that is sending out email unknown to the user and spreading the virus (as is common these days), then DU Meter will tip you that this is going on and you can quickly disconnect from the internet before spreading it any further and try to identify and eliminate the worm or virus.

If you configure it as described above, it will sit quietly in the tray until it detects incoming or outgoing activity, then pop up to show you what is happening. Many Internet users find it indispensible.
