I have AOL Cable (DSL). Will TweakMASTER work for me?

TweakMASTER Knowledge Base article KB0096

If you are using AOL with a broadband connection like Cable/DSL, then you can still use TweakMASTER to optimize your connection.

If you select the second option, ADSL/Cable, on the second screen of the wizard (accessible from the "Internet Optimization" screen) that should be a good place to start. If you find this does not work well for your connection, then here are some other things to try:

On the "Internet Optimization" screen in TweakMASTER simply use the drop down arrow at the right of the field labeled "interfaces" to select your network adapter, typically some kind of Network card. The wizard will have set MTU for that one to 1500 as a first step. Try that and see how it works: if it works well, ignore the rest of these suggestions. If not, then read on...

You may also wish to experiment manually with some other options. 1492 is one such option. Or with it set to 1500 (after a reboot) use the MTU Probe to see what number you come up with. Try setting MTU to the that number and a high value corresponding TCP Receive Window (the bottom three options in the "set to" field. Or you could try the Windows default setting as well.

NOTE: there is a small chance AOL is reverting your settings for MTU. This is a nasty trick of AOL's and while TweakMASTER will work around that and force Windows to retain those settings for most people, we have had several reports from AOL users where the settings were NOT retained.

This has not been reported with cable settings. If you set it to some value and after logging on to AOL, you find that it has been reset to some other value, please let us know.

If it does reset the MTU to 1400, there is not much you can do about it at this point. Just leave it there. You should then change your RWIN setting manually then by clicking the little down arrow in the "Set to" box to "Default" and just leave it at that. In the alternative you could experiment with setting RWIN to a multiple of this 1400 MTU, try the MSS*4, MSS*6 or MSS*8 options and let us know if that works better or worse for you than using "default".

Note that no matter what kind of speed boost you get, that you can still enjoy the benefits of DNS Acceleration, something that DOES work for everyone. You should also appreciate the automatic PC Clock Synchronization feature, as well as ISP Disconnect Prevention, Ping, Traceroute and WhoIs, and the Network Connections Viewer. Restoring your original settings as described above will only affect the MTU optimization settings and not these other features, which many people have reported are well worth the program cost by themselves. And of course with the PRO version, both DU Meter and LinkFox are immensely useful for anyone using the Internet.
