Can I activate my new registry settings without rebooting Windows each time?

TweakMASTER Knowledge Base article KB0119

Short answer: NO

Longer answer:
We have seen it posted on the Internet that you can re-initialize your registry without rebooting for all versions of Windows as follows:

Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE, to bring up the Windows task list. Highlight 'Explorer' and click on 'End Task', if the Shutdown screen is shown, click 'Cancel'. After a few seconds an error message will popup, click on 'End Task' and the Windows explorer will be reloaded along with any new registry settings.

For Windows NT or 2000, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and select "Task Manager". Choose the "Processes" tab and locate the "explorer.exe" process, highlight it and click "End Process". Select 'File -> New Task', then enter 'explorer' and click OK.

Please note

This re-initializes Explorer only. This accomplishes very little, actually. You can get the same functionality by simply logging off and on again. When you kill your Explorer, you lose all tray icons, many programs running in the background will stop working, etc. This trick does NOT affect the network subsystem. The TCP/IP VxDs read their registry settings on startup, and stay loaded in memory after that. Killing Explorer won't help.

A restart of Windows is required in order to apply the modified TCP/IP settings in the Windows registry.
